About Kanaka Creek Cliff Falls

  • Length: .84km

  • Traffic: Low to Moderate

  • Route Type: Out & Back

Upon arriving at Kanaka Creek Falls, Maple Ridge, we were greeted by the sight of a fenced area surrounding the Cliff Falls and scenic viewpoints. Unfortunately, this meant that the falls were somewhat restricted - not just for dogs, but humans too. Although the views can still be appreciated from a distance, it was disappointing that they couldn't be fully appreciated up close. Adventurous individuals climbed over the fence and got close to the falls, but that's not something we'd recommend especially with a dog. The falls itself was fairly underwhelming as well, so we wouldn't recommend coming here just for the falls.

On the positive side, the trail leading to Kanaka Creek Falls provided a decent experience for reactive dogs. The trail was well-maintained, offering a comfortable walking surface and a peaceful ambiance amidst the surrounding natural beauty. It provided an opportunity for dogs and their owners to enjoy a leisurely stroll while taking in the sights and sounds of the forested surroundings.

Past the falls is a bridge that takes you to a picnic area. Since we went during off hours, this area was fairly quiet although we can also imagine how busy it'd get otherwise. Right off of this area, a small loop that you can take to another viewpoint. We took the loop and started making our way back. However, there are plenty of trails in the area to extend the walk with your dog. Since there were mosquitoes out and about, we kept the walk short this time around to enjoy the scenic views.

The fenced-off areas and limited access to the falls may not provide the interactive experiences that dogs typically enjoy. While the trail itself may be suitable for exercise and a change of scenery, dogs may not find the visit particularly engaging or stimulating. That being said, if you're primarily seeking a serene and scenic walk in nature, Kanaka Creek Falls can still be a worthwhile destination. The sound of rushing water and the fresh scent of the woods create a soothing atmosphere that can be enjoyed by both humans and their dogs.

Our Recommendation for Reactive Dogs

While Kanaka Creek Falls presents a visually appealing natural setting, the experience with a dog may be somewhat limited. The fenced-off areas and restricted views of the falls may detract from the overall enjoyment for dogs, but the trail itself can still provide a pleasant walk for reactive dogs and their owners. If you're seeking a leisurely nature walk with your furry friend, Kanaka Creek Falls can be a decent option, but it's important to manage expectations in terms of the specific experiences available for dogs.

What we liked about the trail

  • The trail itself was fairly quiet.

What we didn't like about the trail

  • There were quite a few mosquitoes while we were there.

  • The falls were pretty underwhelming; perhaps we came during the wrong time. Based on our experience, we wouldn't recommend coming out just to see the falls.

  • If you're just there for the views, the trail isn't very long. That length might not be enough for your dog and you might need to extend the walk to the other trails that branch out of this main area.
