Product Review: Litto Howler
Like so many of you, my wife and I are meticulous shoppers. Whether it be online or in-person, we tend to put a lot of research into the things we purchase so that we know we're putting our hard-earned money on the proper products. There are so many options for even basic items like leashes and collars that it's easy to get lost in what we're buying.
We will be writing reviews as we purchase and use these items ourselves. As you do your research for products you're planning to buy, our goal is to add another layer to that research.
For as long as we've had Markus, we've been using one of those generic red leashes that you can pick up for a low cost at the local pet store. We've actually gone through multiples since Markus has chewed through a couple. It was finally time to change ours and in our research to find a new leash, we spotted a brand of leashes that jumped out at us.
When doing research for products, we generally really enjoy the ones that are designed around personal use-cases - ones where dog owners saw a need for a product, but couldn't find one so they made it themselves. This was the case for the owners of Litto Howler who have two dogs, but whenever they took their dogs out, the leashes would always tangle as the dogs ran in and around each other. So they sought out to solve this problem.
They came out with the Meka Double Leash, a leash that starts out with a single handle and branches out to two separate leashes. The leashes are connected by a swivel that turns with the dogs as they run in and out so they never get tangled.
You might be thinking - if a single handle is connected to two dogs, it's gotta be pretty strong to withstand that pull. The cool thing about Litto Howler is that their owners are also rock climbers who have experience making climbing ropes that they use to put their full body weight on. They took that knowledge and applied it to dog leashes to build a safe, strong and also stylish leash set that's enough to support the pull of multiple dogs.
Since we only have one dog, we didn’t need the Meka Double Leash, so we got the single leash (their Ekko Leash). Markus pulls at times, especially when there are birds, squirrels or bunnies, but as a medium-sized dog, he doesn’t have the strength to require a leash that’s made to support the weight of humans. For us, we really like the style of the leash and the strength of the leash is an added bonus.
Since we've been extensively working on his leash training, we picked up the the 4-foot long Ekko Leash, which also comes in two other sizes (5 or 6 feet) and three colours (Black, Ranger Green and Mojave Orange). The colour that you can see us using with Markus in our pictures is a red that's unfortunately been discontinued!
All their leashes also come with an auto-locking carabiner that are used in rock climbing, so you know the attachment points are safe and secure as well. The handle end of the leash come with an O-ring that’s convenient for attaching the poop bag holder or using the carabiner to close the loop when Markus is off-leash and the leash isn’t in use. When the loop is closed, we tend to just sling it around our shoulders so we don’t even have to hold it, which is nice.
For us, the best about their leashes is that they're handmade upon ordering. That's how you know that each is leash made with their experience and expertise as rock climbers and that's the type of quality that you can expect for Litto Howler leashes. More than that, in the time that we've been following them and their work, we've seen iterations of their leashes.
We love to support businesses with the type of approach that Litto Howler takes with their products. Developed with the help and voice of their customers, their products aren't only unique and functional, but continue to get better and better. We expect to continue seeing great things from Litto Howler!
We’re so grateful for your support of The Markus Project. We mostly choose our locations through searching and word of mouth. If you know of a park, trail or location you think we should check out, please share it with us. We’d love to know!
